Admirals Face a Quick Turnaround Back to Chicago

After a tough 5-1 loss to Chicago Saturday night, the Admirals don’t have to wait long for a rematch.

Milwaukee returns to the Windy City Tuesday night for a return engagement with the Wolves at Allstate Arena.

It will be sixth of ten meetings between the two geographic rivals, who share an unpleasant taste for one another.

“It’s one thing to be close to (Chicago)and to play them so many times, but we see each other so much that you kind of get sick of playing them,” Mark Van Guilder said.

Van Guilder points to the seven game series the two foes battled through last spring as a big factor.

“The other (thing) was playing them in the playoffs last year,” Van Guilder said. “Whenever you go through a seven game playoff series like we did with those guys, you definitely get up when you play them.”

The final aspect of the rivalry on the ice is the culture clash between organizations.  Nashville runs the Admirals as its primary developmental organization, stock piling the team with top prospects that are generally younger players.

Meanwhile, Atlanta keeps the Wolves as less of a dependent club by stocking Chicago with numerous AHL/NHL veterans, players like Jason Krog and Darren Haydar, who can pile up the points in the AHL, but have a more limited value to the parent NHL club.  The result is a style clash that plays out in intense ways on the ice.

“It’s always a good battle against two good teams that do things differently,” Van Guilder said.

Ok. So…About Last Night

Wasn’t there and didn’t listen to the game.  But from the people that I’ve talked to, it sounds like it wasn’t that great of a showing.

I’ll let the people who made the trip chime in with their thoughts in the comments section….but to sum up…not a good day for the Nashville organization.  Ads lost to the Wolves 5-1, Preds lost to the Kings 6-1, and the Cyclones lost 7-2.  So 18-4 is the grand tally.

Turning point in the game?  Already down 2-0 in the waning moments of the 2nd period, Blum and Laakso were called for penalties at the same time, and it gave the Wolves a full two minutes with the two-man advantage.  They only needed 26 seconds to cash in, scoring at 19:59 of the period.  Still on the power play opening the 3rd period, they scored again to make it a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile in Music City, Mark Dekanich made is NHL debut coming on in relief of Anders Lindback, stopping 22 of 25 shots in a hair under 50 minutes of action.  You can check out the game highlights from Dirk’s recap at ontheforecheck.com.  Not the best goals he has given up….ok, that’s a weird sentence.  Credit the Kings, but I think Dex probably wants one or two of those back.

And then after the game, he was re-assigned to Milwaukee, along with Steve Begin.  So I think that will mean the end of Chet Pickard in Milwaukee for a bit, and maybe Dylan Hunter too.

So for those who made the trip to Rosemont….. Was this the worst effort you’ve seen all year?  Good thing this wasn’t last last game before the holiday break….

Smith Scares Monsters; Ads Win 3-0

In their final home game before Christmas, the Admirals welcomed the Lake Erie Monsters out of the cold.  And then they kicked them out and shut the door on them, getting the victory 3-0 on Friday night.

Jeremy Smith turned aside all 31 shots he faced for first AHL shutout, and boy did he earn it.  Many of the saves were Hasek-esque, and his athleticism was on full display.  Well positioned, well timed, and with good vision of the puck all night, Smith solidified his position as the #2 goalie in town after Nashville returns one to us in the very near future.

“Our goalie was the difference in the game,” Coach. Lambert said after the game.  Tough to argue otherwise.

“There were some dangerous rebounds at times, but I think the thing that stood out the most for me was his athleticism and his ability to battle on second saves.  Some of those saves were desperate saves, and he’s got good quickness and good athleticism that allowed him to do that.”

The Admirals were able to kill off all five Monster power play chances, and Coach is quick to credit Smith for that success.

“And as I’ve said numerous times, your penalty killing is only as good as your goaltender.  And they probably should have had a couple power play goals, but our goaltender made the difference.”

The first goal of the game was present for Ryan Thang…giftwrapped by Julien Brouiliette.  Along the near boards in his defensive zone, Brouiliette tried to make a cross-ice pass to another player, but his stick got more ice than puck.  Since he didn’t get the wood on it that he intended, the puck went right to a forechecking Thang, who beat Jason Bacashihua with a backhand shot that made Teddy Bears fall from the sky.

In the second period, some forechecking  by Linus Klasen led to the Admirals second goal.  Yes, a steal instead of a turnover from Klasen.  After a poor clearing attempt seemed to catch a bad spot on the boards, Klasen picked up the puck, darted towards the net, and instead of shooting, found Mark “The Proof” Santorelli by the right goalpost.  It was the Proof’s 7th of the year.  That was a set play, after winning the neutral zone face-off, and playing it around the boards.  Credit to Klasen for coming away with the puck, and credit to Santorelli for being at the right place in front of the net.

2-0 for the Admirals after two periods, but they were outshot 24-14 in the same span.  Lake Erie really did dominate the 2nd period, but Smith and the Admirals’ defense were outstanding.

Jamie Lundmark made it a 3-0 lead with a power play marker in the 3rd.  Aaron Johnson was pinching down and took a shot from a sharp angle, and the rebound kicked right to the slot, where Lundmark was working.  It was another of the dirty blue-collar goals that Lundmark has had the knack for lately, driving to the net and putting in a rebound.  His shot seemed to deflect off of Bacashihua’s skate and hit the roof before bouncing back down and over the line.

Lines:

Thang – Van Guilder – Bourque
Thuresson – Lundmark – Geoffrion (the latter two both took some faceoffs)
Wilson – Hunter – Bartlett
Klasen – Mueller – Santorelli

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:

Remember that one shot that Jeremy Smith kept the puck from going in the net?  That was awesome, man.  And then that other one right after that when he was in the crease and then made the save?  That was awesome too.  So, did you ever see the Terminator?

No seriously, how awesome was Smith and the defense?  Equal MVP’s in tonight’s game, would you say?  Any of the defensemen excel over the others?

– Great to see the Ads capitalize on the Monster defensive zone miscues.  Lane talks a lot about playing a detailed game, and the Monster defensemen’s lack of detail helped lead to those first two goals.  That’s what lack of detail looks like.  And we don’t usually see it on our end of the ice.  I give Johnson a hard time about his penalties, but we really are fortunate to have 7 bona fide pro defensemen, who are consistently being some of the best players on the ice night in and night out.  It’s a luxury that our young goalies are lucky to have right now.

– Thuresson?  Bueller?  Bueller?  Looked like he took a step backwards tonight.  Not scoring.  Not hitting.  No urgency.  Fair statement?

– Not Lundmark’s best game, but he made up for some of it with that goal.  He’s becoming the go-to-guy in front of the net.

– A couple more penalties for Aaron Johnson.  We have now officially renamed the penalty box “Johnson’s Office”.  And in our twittercasts, Sutty is giving his teammates tasks to do in Johnson’s office when they go to the box.  Like putting some coversheets on some TPS reports.  Sutty thinks he’s pretty funny.  I think he is too.

– Do you like seeing Klasen get fired up like he did in the 3rd?  Or would you rather he stay out of confrontation?

– Anything else catch your eye tonight that you’d like to share with the class?

– And let’s hear it for the pre-game wedding.  Let it be a lesson for all you engaged people out there….don’t tie the rings too tight on the pillow!  And the ceremony doesn’t need to be long…..the sooner it’s done, the sooner you get to the bar!

Caption Contest Winner 12/17

You’ve had your chance to be funny.  And now it’s time to select a winner in our latest caption contest.

Honorable Mentions go to:

– Big Red for “Limbo. You’re doing it wrong.”  It’s not a bona fide caption contest unless Big Red gets an honorable mention.  So there it is.

– Creed Feed for “There’s goes Blake’s shot at getting on ABC’s Skating With The Stars!”  It’s funny, but totally piggybacking off of the last winner with the ABC prime time television reference.   Can’t give it to ya this time.

And with the help of Mr. Big Shot himself, Eric Kent….. we have selected and are pleased to announce the winner of the delicious media room cookies…..

Even after four years at Wisconsin, Blake Geoffrion still has to be taught how to “Jump Around”.

Mazel tovs to Mark for his caption!  Send me a message to admiralsroundtable (at) g(mail) dot com , and we’ll work out the delivery.  If you’re coming to tonight’s game, let me know your seat location, and I should be able to get your winnings to you this evening.

As always, thanks to everyone for playing our silly reindeer games.

Steve Begin Recalled to Nashville; Dylan Hunter joins Milwaukee; Mark Van Guilder Update

News out of Nashville is that Steve Begin has been recalled.  I fully expected Begin to get the call up to the Music City at some point this season, but what surprised me is that it took this long.

During his time in Milwaukee, Begin got 21 games of AHL seasoning and retooling, chipping in three goals and one assist.  Begin started showing signs of shaking off the non-training camp rust before suffering an injury setback.

But this is a well-deserved promotion for a guy who plays hard every night.

In his place the Admirals called up Dylan Hunter from the Cincinnati Cyclones.  Hunter bears a striking resemblance to former NHL-er Dale Hunter, one of the toughest guys ever to play the game.  Of course Dylan is Dale’s son.  Considering the Admirals are losing Begin, there doesn’t seem to be a more perfect player to take his place.

Mark Van Guilder is also close to returning the Admirals.  He may be back in the lineup as soon as Tuesday night in Chicago.

So, Roundtable, what are your expectations for Begin in the NHL?  Will he fit right in with Nashville, or will this not work out?  Do you like the addition of Hunter, who played nine games in Milwaukee last season?

Haydar Suspended

So, I’m just minding my own business…reading some of the headlines and news stories at theahl.com ….. And then I see this:

The AHL also announced that Chicago Wolves right wing Darren Haydar has been suspended for three (3) games as a result of his actions in a game at Abbotsford on Dec. 11.

Haydar was assessed a game misconduct under AHL Rule 40.4 for physical abuse of an official (Category III), resulting in an automatic three-game suspension.

Haydar will miss Chicago’s games tonight (Dec. 15) and Friday (Dec. 17) at Rockford and Saturday (Dec. 18) vs. Milwaukee.

Haydar?  Suspended?  3 games?  What the hell happened?  That’s not like him.  Maybe all that time being a Chicago Wolf is rubbing off on him?

I haven’t seen the play yet, but in reading several sources (including the Wolfkeeper.org message boards), here’s how it seems to have happened.

The story starts in a familiar way, with Haydar questioning why referee David Banfield (who is an AWFUL referee) didn’t call a penalty on one of the Abbotsford Heat players after Haydar was taken down.  Nothing surprising so far.  Haydar does that all the time.

Banfield then gave him two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Then a misconduct for abuse of officials.  The linesman escorting him off the ice was apparently being a bit aggressive in his driving.  And Haydar gave a push back.  That’s definitely a no-no.  And that’s where the game misconduct and suspension came from.

We’ve seen linesmen get a little extra fresh with players before.  Do you think they should have their actions reviewed by the league too?  Where is line drawn where officials can abuse players?

I’ll see if I can find the video somewhere on the internet, and share it with the class….

Taking a Look at Milwaukee Alums who are playing/have played with the Nashville Predators in 2010-2011

With Nick Spaling finally getting over the hump and scoring his first NHL goal, I thought it would be worth taking a look at the progress of some of the Admirals who have played with Nashville so far this season, but also who have spent time in Milwaukee.

Spaling hasn’t had much puck luck in the NHL, as it took 50 games to get over the hump against the New York Islanders.  On a 5-on-3 power play Spaling setup on the right side of the net.  A couple of nice passes later and Spaling had himself a gaping net.

“It was a pretty nice play and they set me up pretty good there,” Spaling said.  “It was a wide open and I just had to put it in.  I was pretty lucky to get that one.”

(Check out the rest of his post game conversation here)

It is now going on two weeks and Mark Dekanich has yet to get a start with Nashville during his second stint with the club in 2010-2011.  The problem has been the unbelievable play of goaltender Anders Lindback.   Lindback has two shut outs in a row, and those starts weren’t even his best so far.  Last Wednesday Lindback shut down Detroit for a 3-2 Nashville win, making 15 saves in a third period dominated by the Red Wings.

Dekanich looks likely to get in goal for his first NHL game sometime this week as Nashville faces three games in four nights starting tonight at home against San Jose.

Fellow Scandinavians, Teemu Laakso and Linus Klasen, have each played in one game a piece with the Predators and both have yet to record a goal.

Of the other players who skated with Milwaukee in 2009-2010 and are currently with Nashville, Cal O’Reilly has six goals and 18 points, Colin Wilson has six goals and 12 points, Cody Franson is off to a great start with 4 goals so far and Alexander Sulzer has yet to score in 12 games of NHL action.

Stay tuned later this week for my feature on the relationship between Nashville and Milwaukee in the Predators organization, and in January for my piece on the success of Milwaukee developing NHL talent.

New Caption Contest

Long break in the middle of the week… So to help pass the time, here’s another caption contest for you, courtesy of the lens of Scott Paulus.

As usual, media room cookies will be awarded to the winner and delivered to their seats at a future Admirals game.  Or if the winner isn’t local, maybe we’ll send you an autographed picture of Sutty eating media room cookies.  That’d have to be able to get you, like, 25 cents on eBay.  Maybe a buck with the buy-it-now option….

ANYWAY…..

RULES:  Submit a caption of the picture, or you can give quotes to the players in the picture in the comments section of this post.  Just make us laugh!  Keep the content PG-13, and don’t insult your fellow fans.

Good luck!

2010 Admirals High School Hockey Showdown

The 2010 Milwaukee Admirals High School Showdown will be host for the fifth year to a group of top teams in Wisconsin high school hockey.  The tournament has produced three of the last five WIAA state champions and once again appears to be a key to the top teams’ seasons.  The holiday tournament will run from December 27-29.

The teams in the holiday showdown are all from southeastern Wisconsin and consist of Cedarburg, Germantown, Kenosha, Mequon Homestead, University School of Milwaukee, Marquette University High School, Whitefish Bay/Nicolet/Shorewood and Hartland Arrowhead.

University School is the defending Admirals Showdown Champion and used its success in the tournament to springboard their run to the WIAA State Championship.   Last year’s champion Wildcats won their first round game  2-1 in a shootout against Marquette.  In the semi-finals they defeated Cedarburg 3-2, and would knock out Arrowhead 4-2 in the finals.

This year Marquette High enters the tournament as the highest ranked team in the Wisconsin High School Power Rankings and are currently ranked #4 in the state.  Marquette will face Germantown in the first round.  University School faces Kenosha, Homestead takes on Cedarburg, and Arrowhead matches up against WNS.

Each team is guaranteed at least one game at the Bradley Center and is the highlight of some the teams seasons.

Battle Tested Ads Down Barons

The Admirals finished a three games in three days set getting five out of a possible six points, capping the weekend with a 2-1 victory over the Oklahoma City Barons.

Things didn’t start out peachy, with Blake Geoffrion whistled for a stick infraction just 49 seconds into the game.  The penalty was able to be killed, but then  5:33 into the game, Teemu Hartikainen skated the puck out of the far circle towards the blue line in his own zone. He dropped the puck back to Liam Reddox who was waiting in the same circle.  He gathered the puck, spun  360 and put the puck on net.  Reddox’s shot found the back of the net to the surprise of everyone. The shot never left the ice and beat Smith five hole to give the Barons an early lead.  It may have been deflected.

16:48 into the first period Bendfeld felt he was wronged in some way by Aaron Johnson. Bendfeld began to hack, shove and poke at Johnson as they skated up and down the ice. Johnson not laying down pushed back but for the most part was disciplined in not taking the bait. Scott Ford on the other hand didn’t like the way Bendfeld was acting and decided to REGULATE.  After trading blows and Ford getting Bendfeld’s helmet off Ford began to work the body like Rocky on a slab of meat. When Bendfeld let his guard down Ford would get Bendfeld with a right cross. It was probably the best fight I have seen Ford involved in. Unanimous decision went to Ford in the bout.

Greg Stewart went to the sin bin with about a minute and a half left in the first for a double minor high sticking. This would give the Admirals the opportunity to get pucks on net considering that prior to the penalty the Admirals had a whopping 1 shot on goal. After the double minor the Admirals had a blistering five shots, compared to the Barons’ 14.

The Admirals were able to convert in the second period and tie the game at 1 aside. With a 2 on 1 breakaway it was Chris Mueller and Mark Santorelli  skating into the zone with the lone defender Dave Bonk.   Skating in with Santorelli following, Mueller dropped the puck back to Santorelli and went to the far side as The Proof came to the near circle. Santo put on the breaks showed a quick deek bringing Bonk to the ice in a defensive slide. Santorelli let Bonk pass by then skated to the slot and wristed a shot through traffic and lit the lamp at the 11:23 mark.  It was a great goal and dare I say, heady goal as well.

The Admirals were able to minimize the differential in SOG in the second period getting the majority of chances, 9 shots vs. Barons’ 6. Even Mark Santorelli said in the second intermission interview with the acclaimed Matt Moore that they needed to get shots on goal in the 3rd period.

… And shots they got. Just 1:39 into the third period Klasen brought the puck down the near boards uncontested. He was able to get into the near circle and that is when he let loose with a wrister that caught Barons’ goalie Martin Gerber in the mask (incredibly plain, boring, pedantic, dull, unexciting mask). The rebound fell into the slot where a crashing Mueller slashed at the puck on his backhand and netted his first goal and second point of the night.

That goal would be the last of the game for both teams but not for lack of trying. The Admirals always find a way to make things difficult or exciting, depending on your view point. With 1:30 to go in the game Brett Palin decided that skating 5 on 5 wasn’t fair for the Barons. So he decided to one hand shove a player to the ground and draw the penalty. Late penalties seem to be habitual for the Admirals this season. In this instance however, the Admirals were able to overcome the odd man attack and hang on to the win.

More to come….but feel free to start the discussion.
