The 2015 AHL All Star Classic rosters have just been revealed. The Milwaukee Admirals will have goaltender Magnus Hellberg representing the team in Utica later this month. It is the Swede’s first ever selection to the All Star team.

Hellberg’s selection comes on the back of what has been a fantastic rebound season for him. He has a record of 7-4-2-2 in net this season with a 1.89 goals against average, 0.928 save percentage, and a shutout. His goals against average is second in the AHL to Eastern Conference All Star representative Jeff Zatkoff‘s 1.69 GAA.

There were always going to be some All Star snubs. It seems as if one All Star candidate from the Admirals who you can cast as a snub would be Brendan Leipsic who is fourth among rookie scorers in the AHL this season with 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists) in 33 games.

What are your thoughts on this year’s AHL All Star selections? Who were the biggest snubs? How happy are you to see Magnus Hellberg represent the Milwaukee Admirals for the event?

AHL Suspends Mike Liambas for 3 Games

The AHL has announced that Mike Liambas has been suspended 3 games for an illegal check to the head. The Admirals forward was given a match penalty for his hit to Louis-Marc Aubrey in the second period of Milwaukee’s 4-2 in Grand Rapids.

Press Release via AHL:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League today announced that Milwaukee Admirals left wing Michael Liambas has been suspended for three (3) games as a consequence of a match penalty for an illegal check to the head of an opponent, assessed in a game at Grand Rapids on Jan. 2.

Liambas has already served one game of the suspension. He will also miss Milwaukee’s games Thursday (Jan. 8) vs. Rockford and Friday (Jan. 9) at Rockford.

Liambas sat out the Admirals last game to serve an automatic suspension that is imposed when a player receives a match penalty. As Dean Evason stated after the game, he could have played but the league would have tacked on the automatic one-game to his suspension. He served it. And now really only needs to sit for two games.

Aubrey, who was on the receiving end of the hit, missed the rest of the game following Liambas’ check. The Griffins don’t play until tomorrow. Keep an eye out for whether or not he remains out of their lineup.

You can watch the hit that Liambas dished out and the follow up fight in the early going of Friday night’s game highlights:

So Roundtable . . . What do you think of the Liambas suspension? Was three games warrented or was this a bit excessive? Do you think Milwaukee will miss their tough guy against always physical Rockford?

Miikka Salomäki Reassigned to the Milwaukee Admirals

Miikka Salomäki might not have made his NHL debut. But, getting the look up from Milwaukee, it is clear that the Nashville Predators like what they’re seeing. (Photo Credit: Joshua Lindsey // USA Today Sports)

After a quick cup of coffee at the NHL level Miikka Salomäki has been reassigned by the Nashville Predators and will rejoin the Milwaukee Admirals ahead of their three-in-three later this week.

Salomäki was with the Predators for two games this past weekend as Nashville played out of the West Coast. He was a healthy scratch for both contests. That meant spectating for the bonkers crazy 7-6 (OT) win against the Los Angeles Kings and the 4-3 (SO) loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

Apart from the boost to his bank account for his quick look up, it feels like this should be a well deserved look up top at life at the NHL level for Salomäki who enjoyed a great rookie season last year and is doing good work this season. It’s always great to get a look from the AHL to the NHL to take a peak at just what it is you are working for. Have to imagine, even without playing a game, that this was an enjoyable experience for the young Finn.

Thoughts on this roster move? Do you feel as if the Nashville Predators were right in calling up Miikka Salomäki only to not play him?

If you ask me, “how good was last night’s Admirals game?” I would respond by saying it was their best effort since November. They managed to puzzle together a complete game for the first time in a long time and really throttled the Hamilton Bulldogs in their 4-1 victory.

How did they managed to pull that game off? I feel that the team looked to minimize what they were doing offensively by playing a very North/South game and just looking to put pucks to the net. No nonsense. Nothing individualistic. Nothing flashy. Nothing but bare bones out-work the opposition. That’s what the Admirals identity typically is. And that’s what happened in the first, second, and third period last night. The result was a 31-16 advantage in shots on goal for the Admirals and a scoreboard that reflected their effort.

The real question now becomes whether or not they can bottle up this performance and carry it over into the oncoming three-in-three that starts up on Thursday night against the Midwest Division leading Rockford IceHogs. The Admirals will play the IceHogs both Thursday and Friday before finishing off on Saturday against the Charlotte Checkers. It should be a big test. Can they take bigger steps forward from last night? Time will tell.

After the game I spoke with Dean Evason, Zach Budish, and Triston Grant. Here is what they had to say after the Admirals broke out of their four game winless streak.

A Giant Step in the Right Direction; Ads win 4-1

Joe Pendenza finally put and end to the Milwaukee Admirals power-play drought tonight. (Photo Credit: Scott Paulus)

The Admirals won 4-1 against the Hamilton Bulldogs Saturday night. This was a much improved performance for the Admirals who played a much more simple game tonight. They ended up outshooting the Bulldogs 31-16 and really controlled this game from start to finish.

“We’ve played pretty good the last four or five hockey games,” said Milwaukee Admirals head coach Dean Evason. “Hopefully this is a learning curve for all of us. A game that we can remember that not only did the right things but got rewarded for it. Some of the breaks, and good things that happened, were because we were playing the right way. We made those breaks and it feels good for sure.”

This contest started off with a fight four minutes into the first period. Rich Clune squared up with Bulldogs defenseman Greg Pateryn. As far as fights go – this wasn’t anything special. It was over quickly and ended with both falling to the ice.

The Admirals went through the entire month of December without scoring a power-play goal on home ice. Their last power-play goal was scored by Viktor Arvidsson back on 11/21/14. They then proceeded to go on a run of thirty-two straight chances without scoring on the man-advantage. That run finally ended tonight.

On the Admirals first power-play chance of the night they missed two clean cut chances from the right wing to score goals. Joe Pendenza on a backdoor shot that Joey MacDonald denied. And then Brendan Leipsic fanning on a one-timer. Fortunately for Pendenza he had a second chance. After Leipsic fed wing-to-wing for an Arvidsson one-timer the puck skipped in on goal and right to the net crashing Pendenza. He put away the garbage to score his sixth goal of the season and mercifully end the Admirals over month long power-play drought.

The Admirals started the second period with a four-on-three power-play chance. As their opportunity ended another scoring chance presented itself in the form of an odd man break. When Davis Drewiske’s diving poke check attempt at the blue line failed to disrupt the run of Leipsic it sent him on a two-on-one with Arvidsson. Leipsic passed over and Arvidsson had the finish to score his tenth goal of the season.

It would become 3-0 Admirals just two minutes later after Frédérick Gaudreau scored his fourth goal of the season. Taylor Aronson’s initial shot was ripped so hard that it managed to allude the glove of MacDonald and spill out in front of him. Gaudreau, similar to Pendenza earlier, was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on a loose puck.

Second period fireworks continued with the game’s second fight of the night. This was a heavyweight bout between Jonathan Diaby and Shane Bakker. This fight dragged on a little bit but both landed some clubbing blows to one another. I’d mark this an even ten for both in my fight card.

Triston Grant looked to be the most important person in the world in the eyes of Joe Finley tonight. The two were at it the majority of the game until they finally dropped the glove in the third period. It didn’t last that long. If anything, the initial trigger to the fight looked far worse. Finley had a small spear job to Grant before the veteran Admiral crosschecked the Bulldogs d-man into his own goaltender’s cage.

“I just wanted to go out and play hard,” said Triston Grant. “I gave him a couple of bumps early and just kind of two tough guys trying to go at it. I think I got under [Finley’s] skin halfway through the game.”

Zach Budish marked his 100th career game as a professional hockey player off with a superb goal in his return to the Milwaukee Admirals lineup. Mark Van Guilder had a good screen out in front of MacDonald but Budish’s shot was ripped high glove side on the near post. It’s Budish’s second goal for the Admirals this season.

“Every time we talk to Matt MacDonald in Cincinnati [Zach Budish] has played great,” said Evason. “He’s arguably the best forward down there. Doing all the right things. I didn’t even say hello to him until I got on the bench and I just said, “I heard you’re playing great. Don’t change.” And he didn’t. He played great.”

Midway through the third period the Bulldogs ended Marek Mazanec’s shutout bid. After Joe Piskula was called for slash, Drayson Bowman found himself on a break after getting a step on the Admirals penalty kill off the left wing. His shot beat Mazanec to the blocker side for his sixth goal of the season.

Ramblings: Before tonight’s game the Nashville Predators officially called up Miikka Salomäki and Viktor Stålberg. The Admirals countered with a move of their own by recalling Zach Budish and Garrett Noonan from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. By playing in tonight’s contest Budish played his 100th career game as a professional hockey player: 57 AHL games, 43 ECHL games. Tonight’s scratches were Mike Liambas, Garrett Noonan, and Johan Alm.

Thoughts on tonight’s performance? What changed in the Admirals from yesterday? Coulf this be the start of the ball starting to roll the other way?

Budish and Noonan Recalled to Milwaukee

Big Head. Bigger Call Up. (Photo Credit: Scott Paulus)

With yesterday’s news that the Nashville Predators called up Miikka Salomäki and Viktor Stålberg it feels like the Milwaukee Admirals need some reinforcements of their own. Surprise! That’s just what we’ll be getting tonight. Zach Budish and Garrett Noonan have both been recalled from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

Budish was sent down to the ECHL at the end of October after starting the season off with the Admirals where he scored 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 6 games. Since, he has enjoyed a very strong run for the Cyclones: 22 points (8 goals, 14 assists) in 27 games, a plus/minus rating of +10, and 20 penalty minutes.

Noonan was only just sent down to the Cyclones two days ago. He only played in one game before being brought right back. He registered a pair of shots on goal and took a holding penalty.

Thoughts on these call ups? Happy to see the return of Zach Budish? Would you start Garrett Noonan over Jonathan Diaby?

Bulldogs: Scouting the Enemy

Perhaps what the Admirals need right now is an opponent that they have next to no knowledge of so that they can focus purely on their own game. That’s pretty much the story tonight as Milwaukee sees a team from the North Division visit Milwaukee for just the second time this season.

~The Enemy~

The Hamilton Bulldogs have a record of 15-13-6-0 (36 points) which has them sitting in third place of the North Division. By picking up a point in their 3-2 (OT) defeat to the Chicago Wolves last night, and the Admirals 4-2 loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Bulldogs are now in the eighth and final playoff spot of the Western Conference. Lucky for the Admirals that the season isn’t on the line tonight. There is still plenty of time for both of these teams to climb the ladder.

~Who What Now?~

The Bulldogs are a team build with two players leading the way in scoring: Charles Hudon and T.J. Hensick.

Hudon leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) in 34 games. He is tied for the team lead in power-play goals with Sven Andrighetto with each having 3 PPG’s. Hudon also has a plus/minus rating of +7  and 40 penalty minutes.

Hensick is second on the team in scoring with 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists). He’s a +4 player and, in 34 games, only has 4 penalty minutes.

Other players to keep a keen eye out for include: Gabriel DumontJake Dowell, and Eric Tangradi.

~Tendy Tandem~

In net right now the Bulldogs have Mike Condon and Joey MacDonald. Condon, despite this being his first full season at the AHL level, has played in 4 more games than his veteran counterpart. Both have performed quite well though. Condon: 8-7-3-0 record, 2.36 goals against average, 0.927 save percentage. MacDonald: 6-5-3-0 record, 2.95 goals against average, 0.902 save percentage.

What should we expect from the Milwaukee Admirals tonight? Is it getting to the point where you don’t know which Admirals team is going to show up? Scoreline prediction?

New Year, Same Problems; Ads lose 4-2

Teemu Pulkkinen has been an unstoppable force this season in the AHL. His equalizing slap shot in the third period may have still been ringing in the ears of the Ads as the game-winner would come less than a minute later. (Photo Credit: Mark Newman)

The Admirals lost 4-2 on the road against the Grand Rapids Griffins Friday night. This game saw the Ads drop their fourth consecutive game after blowing a late lead. The Griffins only lead of the night came with 3:34 left in regulation and they achieved it by scoring the game-winner only fifty-six seconds after equalizing.

Colton Sissons put the Admirals on the board first in the opening period. This goal was neatly set up by a pass by Joe Pendenza as he broke down the left wing and lead his pass to the center lane drive of Sissons who put a stick to the puck before Tom McCollum could make a play on it. The puck banked off the post, back off of the netminder’s skate, and over the line for Sissons ninth goal of the season.

In the second period, Mike Liambas was ejected from the game after delivering an illegal check to the head of Louis-Marc Aubry. It was a blindside hit and Liambas appeared to catch Aubry with an elbow to the face. This triggered Brennan Evans to engage Liambas and they had a decent enough tilt. Evans had the better of the exchanges. As for Aubry he would not return for the rest of the game.

The Liambas penalty gave the Griffins a full five minutes of non-stop major penalty to work with on the power-play. To the Admirals credit, they were twenty-seven seconds away from killing off the entire penalty without even allowing a shot on goal. Unfortunately one shot was taken. And it was a blast from the center of the point, through traffic, taken by Anthony Mantha – who scored his sixth goal of the season.

In the third period the Admirals would regain the lead after Mark Van Guilder scored his fourth goal of the season. Triston Grant, making his return to Grand Rapids for the first time since leaving the Griffins, made a strong play off the forecheck and passed over to Van Guilder who shot on goal almost immediately. The quick release shot was aimed near post, top corner, and beat McCollim to the blocker.

Teemu Pulkkinen celebrated his birthday by scoring his nineteenth goal of the season to level the game up at 2-2. Alexey Marchenko slid a pass over to the Finn on the right wing and he hammered a slap shot off the blocker of Magnus Hellberg, off the far post, and in. It is Pulkkinen’s seventh straight game with a goal.

Less than a minute later the Griffins would take their first lead of the night courtesy of a breakaway goal by Landon Ferraro. The fifth year Griffin was able to get through Jonathan Diaby and set himself off to the races on the right wing. He beat Hellberg underneath the blocker just before Joe Piskula could cut down his shooting angle.

Ferraro would add the empty net tally to seal the game off at its 4-2 final. He fought of Piskula to get to a loose puck along the left wing and beat make-shift goaltender, Austin Watson, for his second goal of the night and twelfth goal of the season.

Ramblings: Prior to tonight’s game Miikka Salomäki and Viktor Stålberg were called up by the Nashville Predators. It is Salomäki’s first career NHL call up. Tonight’s lone scratch would be Johan Alm – who has now missed eleven straight games with an upper body injury. As far as milestones go: Taylor Aronson played his 200th game as a professional tonight (143 ECHL games, 57 AHL games), Magnus Hellberg played his 75th career game as an Admiral to pass Jan Lasak on team’s AHL games played list for goaltenders, and Mark Van Guilder tied Steve Tuttle for eleventh on Admirals all-time games played list with 339 games.

Thoughts on tonight’s game? Why are the Admirals unable to finish off games such as this? What needs to change? And can it be solved by tomorrow night?

Salomäki and Stålberg recalled to Nashville

Salomaki-121014-2
Miikka Salomäki has just earned his first career NHL call up. (Photo Credit: Scott Paulus)

Prior to the start of tonight’s Milwaukee Admirals road game against the Grand Rapids Griffins they lost two forwards. Miikka Salomäki and Viktor Stålberg were both recalled to the Nashville Predators in response to injury woes taking place with the Ads parent club. It hasn’t been made official by either the Predators or Admirals as of yet.

Matt Cullen, Taylor Beck, and James Neal are all banged up at the moment for the Predators. This paves the way for Salomäki’s first career NHL call up. The Finn was certainly pushing his case last season to achieve his first taste of the NHL. He scored 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) in 75 games to lead the Admirals in scoring during the 2013-14 season.

This season Salomäki has recorded 16 points (5 goals, 11 assists) in 29 games, has a plus/minus rating of +13, and 26 penalty minutes. In 10 games last month he scored 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists) and missed 2 games due to illness.

Stålberg will look to get into his first game for the Predators since October 25th when the Pittsburgh Penguins shutout the Preds 3-0. Since he has had a rehab stint in Milwaukee, was injured on the last game of that rehab stint, was placed on waivers, cleared waivers, was assigned to the Admirals, called up, sent down, and is now being called back up. His AHL stats for the Admirals has seen him score 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) in 6 games.

Thoughts? What do you make of Miikka Salomäki being selected by Nashville for his first NHL call up?
