It might not be as complicated as the Marek Mazanec saga but Jonas Gunnarsson has just been loaned to HV71 from the Malmö Redhawks in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Gunnarsson has signed a two-year contract with Malmö in January 2016 months prior to officially signing with the Nashville Predators. His loan with HV71 will last until 31 October, 2017. The SHL season starts league play on 16 September, 2017.
Gunnarsson originally played under the HV71 banner as a 17-year old in their youth academy system. He was with HV71 from 2009-10 to the 2013-14 season. He then signed with Malmö for the 2014-15 season where he played for two seasons before being added by the Predators and being assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals.
It wasn’t quite the greatest of times for Gunnarsson with the Admirals in the AHL. The Swede made 16 appearances, held a record of 3-7-3-1, and had a 3.29 goals against average and 0.878 save percentage. By contrast, the Admirals featured Juuse Saros and Mazanec in a combined 62 appearances from a 76-game regular season in 2016-17. He mainly was stuck on the bench and didn’t quite get opportunities to settle in and evolve.
