Does the prospect of having Kevin Fiala for an extended period of time mean good things for the Milwaukee Admirals this season? I’m thinking yes. (Photo Credit: Christina Shapiro)

The Nashville Predators have effectively sent the Milwaukee Admirals team off to Milwaukee. The Predators reduced their training camp roster by 23 names late this afternoon. The lone name not heading to Milwaukee will be Yakov Trenin who is set to join his junior team Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL). Meanwhile, Kevin Fiala looks as if his 2015-16 season will start in the AHL with the Admirals as he is part of the 22 names heading to Milwaukee’s training camp which starts on Tuesday.

Press Release via Nashville Predators:

Nashville, Tenn. (September 26, 2015) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Saturday that the club has assigned goaltenders Marek Mazanec and Brandon Whitney; defensemen Conor Allen, Johan Alm, Trevor Murphy, Jonathan Diaby, Mikko Vainonen, Jaynen Rissling, Kristian Nakyva, Taylor Aronson, Jimmy Oligny and Garrett Noonan; and forwards Kevin Fiala, Miikka Salomaki, Joe Pendenza, Felix Girard, Pontus Aberg, Vladislav Kamenev, Max Reinhart, Max Gortz, Frederick Gaudreau and Eric Robinson to Milwaukee (AHL). The team also assigned 2015 second-round draft pick Yakov Trenin to his junior team (Gatineau, QMJHL).

Nashville’s training camp roster is now at 28 players – 17 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders. An updated roster is attached.

The Nashville Predators play their final two preseason games this week against the Columbus Blue Jackets, first at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday (7 p.m. CT), then Saturday in Columbus (6 p.m. CT).

The Preds begin the regular season at Bridgestone Arena by hosting the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. CT (FOX Sports Tennessee, 102.5 The Game). Full, half and 13-Game Flex Plan ticket holders continue to receive the biggest savings and the most comprehensive benefits that Smashville has to offer. Season-ticket holders are guaranteed to choose from any regular-season game at Bridgestone Arena, as well as receiving access to 2016 NHL® All-Star festivity tickets. A name that you may have noticed isn’t coming back, at least not yet, is Viktor Arvidsson. There’s still plenty of time for names to trickle down to Milwaukee. For example, Anthony Bitetto is also still with the Nashville camp at the moment. Still, it is impressive to see that for all the Steve Moses buzz and whether or not Fiala can challenge him for a wing role he has been surpassed in the pre-season by Arvidsson. I’d point to age being a small factor but, no matter how it was going to shake out, the internal competition at forward right now should only mean great things across the entire organization.

Surprised to see Fiala end up starting this season with the Admirals? What percentage of Fiala’s season do you expect will be spent in the AHL? Can Arvidsson make the Predators opening day roster?

    1. Kind of. Didn’t expect him to be sent down during the first round of “cuts”
    2. 50%
    3. I don’t think so.

I am more surprised that Sissons and Watson are still up there! Gah as much as I love seeing them play here in Milwaukee I would love for them to get some PT in Nashville.

And Juuse that he’s still in Nashville too? Maybe just want him to get more tutelage from Peks?

  2. TWG: I did see that! I’m expecting Saros to get more starts than Maz this season. I had reservations that Juuse might struggle adapting to the quicker game // smaller rink in North America. NOPE. He’s as good as advertised. I’m thinking Hellberg gets more time in net with Hartford than Maz does in Milwaukee. Starting to see the rationale of that trade. Maz has the NHL experience in the event of a call up… but that’s about it. He’ll need to up his game big time if he’s to compete with Saros.

Also, real happy with Sissons pre-season camp with Nashville. It’s clear he didn’t want another slow start. Would love he and Watson to get NHL time this season.

  3. Toasted Whole Grain says:

Yes totally, I am glad Mags will get the playing time in Hartford, because he deserves it. I am no longer upset that we dealt him.

It’ll be great for the Admirals as a team to see Maz step up with pressure from Saros. To me, Maz just doesn’t have the focus out there to be a brick wall every night…easy for me to say sitting on the couch, lol, but it’s just what I see.

So excited to see Saros in goal hopefully opening night. Can’t wait to hear “and your man…betweeeen the pipes… JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUIUUUUUUUUSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESAROS!”

  4. Jim Zeirke says:

So, you’re figuring that Juuse will be sent to the Ads for the season? What about Brandon Whitney? Is he headed to Cincy?

  5. Jim: 100% Juuse will be with the Ads this season. Probably just giving him extra time with Ben Vanderklok up in Nashville before Dave Rook takes over as the guy who he’ll see the most as goalie coach during the season. Whitney is the ECHL guy for sure. Honestly, I thought he looked good in the Rookie Tournament despite his goals allowed. Big dude but moves well… so like.. every prototypical goalie Nashville finds that isn’t named Juuse Saros.

  6. Josh Huff says:

    1) Not really. Kevin’s only 19. You can harm a player by bringing them up too early, and Nashville knows this.
    2) 80%. I’d expect a March callup as Nashville gets ready for the playoffs (Kinda like how the Hawks did with Teravainen.)
    3) I’d expect not. Watson / Sissons are better suited to bottom 6 duty. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was the first callup, though.

Another interesting thing after looking at the roster…Cody Bass and Jamie Devane are still up with the big club. Perhaps they are competing for the 13th spot, and Watson/Sissons/Arvidsson/Moses/ are competing for those 11th and 12th spots… We shall see!
