Ads Beat the Heat in a Shootout, 2-1

The Admirals won their first game of the season 2-1 in a shootout on the road against Abbotsford Saturday night. Magnus Hellberg came up big in this one with 26 saves and stopping all four shootout attempts he faced. Ads youngster Colton Sissons managed to score his first professional goal in front of his friends and family in British Columbia, as well.

“We really did a lot of good things,” said assistant coach Stan Drulia after the game on Sports Radio 1250 WSSP. “It was good to see the guys continue to battle. We gave up that power-play goal early in the third and we didn’t sit back. We kept on pressing and playing the game we’re supposed to play.”

The opening period ended scoreless, but the Ads missed out on a solid chance to open the scoring early. At the 10:51 marker, Mike Liambas was taken down and on the backside of the play the Heat double up on minor penalties with a roughing call. The Ads had a full two-minutes of 5-on-3 power-play to work with. Not only didn’t they cash in. They didn’t even register a shot on goal. Chalk up another gritty performance to the Heat’s penalty kill.

Shots were much more frequent in the second period. The Ads mustered up a 15-8 shots advantage in the period. Yet, the deadlock remained and both goalies stood up well to the increased pressure poured in on net.

With an interference call being carried over to the start of the third period, the Heat broke the deadlock seconds into frame through Roman Horak. It took the Heat forty-one seconds into the period to cash in on the man-advantage. They managed to clean up off the face off and establish the Ads defensive zone fast. Horak, the Heat’s fourth best scorer last season, picked up his first goal of the season.

The Ads would equalize off of Colton Sissons first professional goal. The native of British Columbia, playing in front of family and friends in Abbotsford this weekend, deflected a shot on net by Taylor Beck that finally beat Heat goalie Reto Berra. Sissons recorded his first career point in the season opener last night with an assist. Tonight? It’s the goal that the family and friends were able to cheer.

Like the night before, this game was tightly contested and pushed its way into overtime. Unlike last night, there wasn’t solid chance to end it in overtime. The game was decided on a shootout with the Ads netting taking the win courtesy of Taylor Beck (glove side wrister), Patrick Cehlin (stick side slap shot), and Magnus Hellberg (who denied all four shootout attempts he faced).

The Ads take a hard earned three points in Abbotsford to start the season. Next up? A meeting on the road this coming Friday with last year’s Calder Cup champions the Grand Rapids Griffins. That will conclude the opening three game road stint to the season with the home opener against the Chicago Wolves taking place Saturday.

So Roundtable….Are you going to not dread shootouts anymore if Magnus keeps this up?  Including the pre-season game, he’s now 14/14 in shootout chances.  Sissons — so far so good, eh?  Are you concerned at all about the 0-8 start on the power play?

Ads Drop Opener in OT, 3-2

The Admirals lost the season opener in overtime 3-2 on the road against the Abbotsford Heat Friday night. Penalties were the big story of the contest. The two combined for thirteen penalties. The game-winner for the Heat just so happened to come come off of one of those penalties in OT by forward Corban Knight to put a damper on the Ads first game of the season.

“I felt we got ourselves into trouble in the second period,” said assistant coach Stan Drulia after the game on Sports Radio 1250 WSSP. “We tried to make too many plays through the middle of the ice. We know [the Abbotsford Heat] like to carve things up. [The Heat] do a real good job in the neutral zone. We got too cute in some of those areas and they were able to generate some opportunities due to that.”

The first period of the season went scoreless but saw the Ads fail to convert on three power-play chances. Slashing. Boarding. Hooking. None produced a goal and the Heat penalty kill improved to a 10-13 kill rate to that point.

The best chances of the opening frame went the way of the Heat. After serving his boarding penalty, the puck found Mark Cundari breaking from the box and his spinning back hand pass was nearly cashed in on the rush to the net. Moments later the Heat nearly capitalized on a mishap behind the net by Magnus Hellberg. Fortunately Hellberg bailed himself out on the play by making a big save and relieving the temporary pressure in his net.

Milwaukee’s breakthrough came shorthanded in the second period. The Ads went on their second penalty-kill of the night after Miikka Salomaki was called for boarding. A solid puck pursuit by Austin Watson set up Patrick Cehlin who netted the opening goal. It was Cehlin’s first career shorty.

[Cehlin] always gives you a great effort,” said Drulia. “If we’re going to have success this year we’re going to need [Cehlin] to provide a lot of offense for us.”

With 4.6 left in the second period the Heat managed to equalize through Turner Elson’s first professional goal. A frenzy in the Heat’s offensive zone lead to a missed poke check by Hellberg that resulted in the equalizer for Elson.

Penalty killing was a major factor in this game. The Admirals managed to endure a lengthy 5-on-3 kill midway through the third period, but the impact of that opportunity charged the Heat’s attack. While they couldn’t solve the Ads penalty kill, the Heat took the lead through a Ben Hanowski goal with just over seven minutes left in the game. Persistence paid off.

However, Taylor Beck wouldn’t allow that Heat advantage stand for long. Beck was Johnny on the spot after work from Anthony Bitetto and Colton Sissons put him open for his first goal of the season. Fun Fact: the assist for Sissons goes down as his first professional point.

The game would go to OT and, as was the story of the game, another penalty put the Ads shorthanded. This time the Heat were able to cash in on the man-advantage after centerman Knight lifted a shot over a sliding Joe Piskula and past Hellberg to win it for the Heat.

First outing of the season was a tight one against a scrappy team. Unfortunately some rust may have shown through at points of this game leading to an OT loss. Still, the Ads pick up a tough earned point on their 2013-14 season opener. The rematch between these two takes place in no less than 24 hours later in the same barn.

Heat: Scouting the Enemy

The Admirals season opens up -FINALLY- tomorrow night on the road against the Abbotsford Heat. It will be the first of a back-to-back with the Heat. The follow up to the Ads 2013-14 curtain raiser will take place no less than 24 hours later. New season for the Ads. New season for the Heat. So, let’s scout the enemy!

The Heat finished last season with a 34-32-4-6 record that put them out of the Calder Cup playoff picture. There are a few familiar names back from last season, but the affiliate of the Calgary Flames boast plenty of prospects this year that should be a big boost.

According to Hockey’s Future’s Top 20 prospects for the Calgary Flames, the Heat will field nine of that list on their roster: C Max Reinhart (4), D Tyler Wotherspoon (6), D Patrick Sieloff (7), C Corban Knight (13), LW Michael Ferland (15), C Markus Granlund (16), D Mark Cundari (17), D John Ramage (18), LW Ben Hanowski (19).

What stands out to me here is defense. There are some quality young defensemen on the Heat with the name Wotherspoon being among the brightest of the core. Wotherspoon was a 2nd Round selection of the Flames in 2011. This will be his first year of professional hockey after a very outstanding career with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. It’s going to be a great watch to see how he handles the AHL level at the start of the season, and the Ads will be amongst his first tests as a pro.

Another one of those Top 20 names that’ll be fun to watch this year is Reinhart. The 64th overall selection in the 2010 Draft made his pro debut with the Heat in the 2011-12 season by scoring two goals in his first game. Yet, that appearance was late in the season and his only appearance. His first full season as a pro came last year. He played 67 games, scored 7 goals, 14 assists, and posted a less than stellar plus/minus of -26. As far as games against the Ads go, he was the biggest threat on the ice last season. In the four games the two matched up Reinhart put up a team best 3 points against the Ads. So, small note to the Milwaukee defense: stop Maximilian.

A name that doesn’t appear on the Top 20 list that deserves mention, Joni Ortio. The 22 year old netminder has been developing in the Finnish Elite League and the AHL the past few years and has been steadily improving between the pipes. His standout performance to date came in the 2011 IIHF U20 World Juniors for Team Finland where he posted a 1.86 GAA with a .931 SV% in six games. Another season means more experience for the young Fin. Expect more improvement from one of the many names hoping to take claim to Miikka Kiprusoff’s ye olde throne.

Also worth mentioning, because I just can’t help it, Mike Liambas versus Zach McKelvie. I don’t believe we’ll necessarily see a Round II, but believe me when I say Abbotsford is a team prided on physicality and toughness. The team has played two games this season and have already set a team record for fighting majors in an opening weekend with six. Expect Mr. Liambas and company to have a little Dosey Doe or two.

How do you think that the Ads will fair this weekend against the Heat?

Oh Captain! My Captain!

Yesterday we speculated about it. Today we can announce it!

Today the Admirals officially unveiled Scott Ford will be the captain for the 2013-14 season. Ford, entering his sixth season on the Ads blue line, will be enjoying his second stint as the team captain. He wore the “C” during the 2011-12 season and was also an assistant captain the three seasons ahead of that.

The Ads also announced the assistant captains for this season. Who gets the “A” patch? Veteran Admiral Mark Van Guilder and everyone’s favorite Sconnie Joe Piskula.

As far as team leadership goes I believe the team chose right here. Not only did they go with the experienced leader but they made our old Scott Ford bobbleheads current!

What say you? Happy with the team selections?

Admirals Media Day

Today the Milwaukee Admirals held their annual media day at the MSOE Kern Center. Coaches and players were all available to give their thoughts ahead of the season opener this Friday in Abbotsford. Above all, this is a team really excited to get off and running with the 2013-14 campaign.

“[Abbotsford] will be a good test for us,” said head coach Dean Evason. “It’s good to get out on the road. To get our group together. We’re looking forward to that start on Friday.”

The team practice ahead of the media festivities gave a solid glance at the Ads final product of countless roster movements. The team includes many fresh faces: Teddy Ruth, Mathieu Tousignant, Colton Sissons, Miikka Salomaki, Simon Moser, Bryan Rodney, and Marek Mazanec. Yet, the general make up of the team feels quite similar to last year’s roster. The Ads will have Taylor Beck, Austin Watson, and Kevin Henderson back in the mix after all enjoyed stints in the NHL last season. The familiar names of Mark Van Guilder and Scott Ford are also be back. All in all, this group looks similar to the one that finished last year off but with a fresh injection of new blood. Something that coach Evason and players alike are excited about.

“We’re excited about having some of the same people back [from last season],” said Evason. “Last year was new for everybody. We didn’t have training camp in Nashville last year. There was a lot of teaching, a lot of getting to know the players, and a lot of the players getting to know [the coaches]. So it’s nice this year to have people that know what to expect from us and we know what to expect from them.”

“We have a good group of guys who played here last year,” cited Magnus Hellberg. “So everybody knows what we’re all about and we can continue to work on what was finished off last year. We have some new guys but they’ve got into the group really well.”

“We have a lot of guys back from last year who were big pieces to our group,” commented Watson. “We’ve got some good young guys coming in like Sissons, Salomaki, and Rask. A lot of good young players only add to that. We’re all excited.”

Speaking of excitement, playing for his first full-year of pro hockey in the States will be Joonas Rask. The younger brother of Bruins starting netminder Tuukka, Rask played 52 games in Finland for Jokerit Helsinki before joining the Ads roster late in the 2012-13 season. In his one and only game as an Admiral last year he scored a goal and an assist. After that game, he went up to Nashville and played two games posting one assist for his first career NHL point. The young Rask features great speed, stick handling ability, and an aptitude to be a solid two-way player.

“[Rask] has impressed us through training camp,” cited Evason. “He finished [last season] well. His speed. His work ethic. He has shown us a skill level this year. We hope that he can continue to grow, develop, and do what he’s done through training camp and show it in the regular season.”

Another player to watch this season is Magnus Hellberg. The catalyst to last season’s surge into the playoffs will start the season in Milwaukee as its number one goaltender. While his experience in Nashville’s camp this offseason might have hit a wall due to a lower body injury, the big Swede is back to 100% fitness and is hoping for a crack at the NHL this season.

“I know the chance is there [to be recalled by Nashville] but I really don’t think about it to much,” said Hellberg. “I’m trying to focus on what I can do down here. If I play good I might get a chance to get called up. But I take it one day at a time and one game at a time. We’ll see what happens.”

The team will also have another young netminder backing up Hellberg in the presence of Marek Mazanec. The native of the Czech Republic has been looking very sharp in camp ahead of the season. According to veteran Scott Ford, this goaltending duo bodes really well for the team.

“[Mazanec] is going to push Magnus right to the limit,” claimed Ford. “I think it’s going to be a great tandem. Kind of a doubleheaded monster where we have confidence in both guys. They’re going to push each other to be the best.”

Did I say Scott Ford? Of course I did. The longest tenured Admiral of the AHL era is back for his sixth season in Milwaukee. Ford started last season as a member of the Peoria Rivermen before jumping ship back to the Ads. The former Ads captain is happy to be on-board for the start of this year’s campaign.

“I’m excited about it,” smiled Ford. “It’s good to be back in this city. It’s good to be back as an Admiral. It’s going to be an exciting year with the guys that we’ve got here.”

One final thought when looking at this team: who is the captain? It hasn’t been unveiled as of yet. Last season’s captain Mike Moore is a member of the Providence Bruins. Men who adorned the “A” such as Brad Winchester, Chris Mueller, and Michael Latta are all long gone. Mark Van Guilder and Scott Ford, who both wore the “A” last season, are on the team and the most likely candidates. So who gets the C? Could it be the man who held it during the 2011-12 season?

“It’s a possibility,” laughed Ford. “I think they’ll unveil it tomorrow at the season ticket holder event. Getting a letter is a big honor. If it happens I’ll be proud to be bestowed with that.”

Should that news take place – expect an update!

New Numbers And New Guys

Here are the new player numbers and the number changes for returning players this year.  Not that you’d ever confuse Joe Piskula for Jon Blum…but these are the numbers to get used to as we get ready for the opening night viewing party at Major Goolsby’s on Friday night.

#5 – Theo/Teddy Ruth
#7 – Joe Piskula
#11 – Paul Crowder
#16 – Mathieu Tousignant
#17 – Mike Liambas
#18 – Colton Sissons
#20 – Miikka Salomaki
#21 – Simon Moser
#31 – Marek Mazanec
#33 – Bryan Rodney
#55 – Charles-Olivier Roussel
#88 – Joonas Rask

According to Todd’s jersey number archive at Milwaukeehockey.com, Rask is NOT going to be the first #88 in Admiral history…that distinction goes to Dan Hodgson, from the 88-89 IHL Admirals.

Ads Close Out Pre-Season With 2-1 OT Loss To The Wild

With Magnus Hellberg and Marek Mazanec playing great hockey, the Admirals were nursing a 1-0 lead late in third period.  But the Iowa Wild finished strong, scoring the equalizer with 4:14 left in regulation, and a power play winner in overtime to give the home(ish) team the 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon in beautiful Moline, Illinois.

Scott Ford scored the lone Admiral goal just 1:45 into the game, after a nice pass from Miikka Salomaki.

Salomaki also played into the last goal in the game as well, for he was the one sitting in the penalty box for a boarding penalty, to give the Wild the 4-on-3 chance.

For the game winning goal, the Wild went ‘around the key’, with point-man Jon Blum passing to Zack Phillips at the left circle for a one-timer that beat Mazanec.

Hellberg saved all nine shots he faced in the first half of the game.  Mazanec was sharp as well, despite allowing the two goals.

FORWARD LINES:

Henderson-Sissons-Beck
Salomaki-Watson-Cehlin
Shalla-Van Guilder-Rask
Liambas-Tousignant-Budish

Simon Moser did not make the trip.

Pessimists will say they are concerned about offense, with the Admirals just scoring two goals in three pre-season games.  Optimists will point to the sample size and the fact that it’s just pre-season.  Optimists will also point out the Admirals goalies gave up just five goals in three season games (plus one empty netter).  Early reviews on Mazanec have been positive.  And Hellberg seems to be picking up right where he left off.

Let’s also hope that Fordo didn’t use up all of his goals for this season in the pre-season…

So Roundtable…how will you be passing the time until OUR opening night next Friday?  Watching the NHL Center Ice preview?  Camping out at Major Goolsby’s to get a good spot for the viewing party on Friday?  Figuring out how much it would cost to get to Abbotsford for a quick weekend getaway? (Guy Lafleur will be making a special appearance on opening night over there)  Counting lucky stars that Krys Kolanos isn’t with the Heat anymore?

Admirals Welcome the Swiss-Born Simon Moser

This morning Simon Moser, a Swiss free agent, officially became a member of the Nashville Predators organization. Moser signed a one-year entry-level contract worth $550,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level, after attending Predators training camp under a tryout agreement.

However, Moser’s first professional days will start in the AHL as a member of the Milwaukee Admirals as the 24-year-old was sent down today.

For those Predators/Admirals fans looking for some instant offense, aka another Damien Brunner (see below video), Moser isn’t quite that player:

Moser’s highest production came during the 2011-2012 Swiss-A League season when he scored 18 goals (tied for 12th overall) and 34 points. However, Moser did help Switzerland to a silver medal in the 2013 World Championships, posting three goals and five points. He’s was also a captain with Langnau, the team the Bern native resided with for the past five seasons.

Here’s a nice little set of Simon Moser highlights via swissnlafan on YouTube:

Moser did produce a couple of goals during the preseason with Nashville. Moser’s preseason stat line: 5 GP, 2 goals, 0 assists, roughly 15 minutes of ice per game.

Individual games:
Sept. 16 vs. Florida: 16:45 TOT, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 SOG.
Sept. 19 vs. Tampa Bay: 14:07 TOT, 0 goals, 0 assists, 1 SOG.
Sept. 24 vs. Tampa Bay: 13:50 TOT, 1 goal, 0 assists, 1 SOG. Moser scored a second period goal assisted by Richard Clune.
Sept. 25 vs. Washington: 15:29 TOT, 0 goal, 0 assists, 3 SOG.
Sept. 27 vs. New York Islanders: 15:02 TOT, 1 goal, 0 assists, 2 SOG. Moser scored Nashville’s second goal in the third period, assisted by Ryan Ellis and Nick Spaling. He was also a +1 in the 6-4 loss.

So Roundtable . . . How do you think Moser will fit in  on the Admirals’ depth chart? How long do think he will stay? Are you excited about Moser’s potential offensive punch added to Milwaukee’s lineup?

Sunday Roster Moves

Say goodbye to Barry Almeida, Vinny Saponari, Scott Darling, and Taylor Aronson.  They’ve all been assigned/loaned to Cincinnati in the ECHL.

Say goodbye to Mike Embach, Mike Moffat, and Chris Reed.  They’ve been released from their tryout contracts.  We hardly knew ye.

Say hello to Taylor Beck, Joe Piskula, and Marek Mazanec.  They were assigned to the Admirals by the Predators today.

And there is something brewing at this hour with Swiss forward Simon Moser.

Ads Fall To Wolves In Second Pre-season Game

Chicago goaltender Jake Allen turned aside all 27 shots he faced, and a short-handed Corey Locke goal was the only offense the Wolves needed, en route to a 3-0 victory over the Admirals Saturday night in pre-season action.

Magnus Hellberg played the first 30:38, before yielding to Scott Darling.  Hellberg was responsible for Locke’s goal at 1:30 of the second period, while the Wolves were killing off a Dmitrij Jaskin boarding penalty.  Sprung on a breakaway, the former AHL MVP beat Hellberg glove-side.

Darling gave up just one goal as well, a late score from Sergey Andronov on a rebound at 14:16 in the third period.  Kyle Davies added the empty netter with 1:08 left in the game.

Hellberg stopped 10 of 11, while Darling stopped 18 of 19, and both teams were 0-2 on the power play.

The Admirals will be playing a THIRD pre-season game this Friday the 4th against the Iowa Wild.  Both the Admirals and Wild are idle during the opening weekend of the AHL season, so that’ll give them the chance to hit someone in a different colored jersey while they wait for their trip to Abbotsford.  That game will be in Moline, Illinois at 2:30pm on Friday.

So Roundtable…anyone make the trip to beautiful Hoffman Estates, Illinois?  Any observations about the game that you’d like to share?
