Wolves: Scouting the Enemy

The Milwaukee Admirals and Chicago Wolves are both set to complete a three-in-three weekend this afternoon. The Admirals lost 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at home against the Iowa Wild but earned a 2-1 overtime win last night on the road against the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Wolves meanwhile are coming off of back-to-back 6-3 victories defeating the Griffins on the road Friday and then the Wild on home ice Saturday. I suppose it makes sense that the best of the weekend series face each other on Sunday and hopefully the third place game between the WIld and Griffins will be played at a later date.

Jokes aside, there is something really exciting about today’s game. The Milwaukee Admirals and Chicago Wolves contest will be broadcasting on the NHL Network at 3:00 PM CST. So, for those who don’t get the opportunity to see the Admirals play on the road or at all, this is a great chance to do so and in a game that could be rather good.

The Milwaukee Admirals very first three-in-three weekend of the 2017-18 is upon us. It arrives at a unique point in time. The Admirals are in an up-and-down funk and have been in that rut since the start of November where they’ve gone 7-9-1-0. They are 1-3-1-0 in the month of December. And the Admirals only have a single win in regulation in their last four wins. Who was it they defeated in regulation last? The Iowa Wild – who set the table for the Admirals this weekend in an attempt to right the ship.

The Milwaukee Admirals have a record of 6-8-1-0 since the start of November. Looking across the border at this weekend’s opponents, the Manitoba Moose, and they have gone 13-2-0-0 since the start of November while enduring 11 road games. Oh, and here is a fun one, the Moose enter this weekend’s set against the Admirals on a 9 game winning streak. This should only go well. How could it possibly not? …let’s find out.

A rivalry that I’m personally enjoying more and more is that of the Nashville Predators and Anaheim Ducks. The two do not get along, pack skill and grit, and can really knock seven bells out of one-another. It is always entertaining to watch. The rivalry is still raw with the 2017 NHL Western Conference Finals match-up still lingering. And we’re not far removed from the two having yet another scrappy affair. If the Milwaukee Admirals and San Diego Gulls can display any of the same intensity as their parent clubs? Milwaukee is in for a treat tonight.

Bears: Scouting the Enemy

The Milwaukee Admirals lost last night to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. While that game had its tough moments what is perhaps most significant was the way the Admirals battled back and played in the third period. They trailed the Penguins 4-2 after allowing a shorthanded goal in the final minute of the second period. They knuckled down, played better defensively, and kept a simple approach in attack. Their persistence and urgent play pushed them forward and forced overtime.

Yes, the Admirals lost in overtime -but- they earned a point on the road against one of the top teams in the entire league. That’s a positive. It wasn’t the ideal result. But the ideal result can be achieved tonight if that exact same approach from last night’s third period can be manifested by the Admirals for a complete sixty-minute effort against the Hershey Bears.

1 June 2004, that was the start of the 2004 AHL Calder Cup Finals between the Milwaukee Admirals and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Admirals won the first two games in Milwaukee before completing the sweep on the road in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to earn the first and, to this point, only Calder Cup. Tonight will be the first time the Admirals journey back to face the Penguins in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since that moment.

And thus begins the long and winding road. The Milwaukee Admirals are embarking on their last game in the month of November tonight. A win would mean going 0.500 on the month but, more importantly, would be setting the right tone for the start of a serious amount of time out on the road. The Admirals are about to endure nine of their next eleven games on the road and the month ahead of them will see only four home games played. If things are going to change for the better it will need to get started on the road. That starts tonight against the Iowa Wild at the Wells Fargo Arena.

If these last two games for the Milwaukee Admirals are anything to go by: expect the unexpected. They will be closing out a three-game homestand tonight against the Manitoba Moose who currently lead the Central Division, are on a five-game winning streak, and only have a single loss from their last ten-games. So, hey, let the good times roll!

Firstly, I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving yesterday. We are now in a fast approach for the conclusion to the Milwaukee Admirals run of games in November. It’s been a lot of “down-up, stop-start, repeat” but we’re currently at an up. All that these kinds of patterns need to be kicked is for two or more results to start going the right way. Wednesday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Cleveland Monsters was a start. Now it is time to see if the Admirals can really follow up strongly this weekend at home.

Take #3! The Milwaukee Admirals are opening up a three-game homestand tonight. They first must solve a puzzle that has stumped them the past two games – the Cleveland Monsters. The Admirals will be doing this without previous NHL caliber names that they had last week in Cleveland: Juuse Saros, Pontus Åberg, and Frédérick Gaudreau. They won’t have Yakov Trenin due to injury. And Trevor Smith and Pierre-Cédric Labrie are questionable due to injury. Despite all of that: can the Admirals avoid losing three straight games for the first time this season?
