The Chatterbox, Vol. 42

Yesterday, the Milwaukee Admirals were able to get out of a two game funk by winning a very complete, wire-to-wire, 4-1 game against the Chicago Wolves. If anything, the lone down spot came with 1:03 remaining in regulation – the exact moment when Magnus Hellberg lost his shutout bid with the Wolves on a power-play with their net emptied. It was a shame that the shutout wasn’t completed. But, in hindsight, the performance speaks for itself. It was a solid game from the Admirals. And they managed to split the weekend set with the Wolves.

After the game I spoke with Dean Evason, Felix Girard, Magnus Hellberg, Rich Clune, and Viktor Stalberg. This is what everyone had to say after the win against the Amtrak Rivals.

Admirals Return to Winning Ways; beat Wolves 4-1

The Admirals won 4-1 against the Chicago Wolves Sunday afternoon. Magnus Hellberg picked up his second win of the season in net as Viktor Stalberg, Felix Girard, Colton Sissons, and Mike Liambas all registed goals in front of him.

“We did like how we responded,” said Milwaukee Admirals head coach Dean Evason. “Certainly we played a different game than we played last night. We played with a lot of energy tonight. Lot of competitiveness.”

Viktor Stalberg opened up the scoring for the Admirals in the second period from the power-play. The goal was beautifully set up by Viktor Arvidsson with a shot-pass that fooled everyone but Stalberg on the back post. It was a tap in. And Stalberg’s first AHL goal since the 2009-10 season as a member of the Toronto Marlies.

Arvidsson’s presence on the ice continued with a fantastic shift that lead to the Admirals second goal of the contest. After cycling the boards with Triston Grant, a shot on goal was kicked out by Matt Climie right to the tape of Felix Girard – who scored his second goal of the season. The two goals were scored 2:21 apart from each other.

There was also a fight in the second period. Jake Chelios had a run at Rich Clune that caught the eye of Jonathan Diaby. The bout wasn’t anything close to the spectacle that Grant vs. Maggio was. Still, it’s great to see the Admirals willingness to stand up for one another.

The Admirals offense was back in attack during the third period courtesy of Colton Sissons. It was a tic-tac-toe play from neutral ice all the way to goal. Brendan Leipsic picked out Stalberg breaking down the left wing, Stalberg dished up a pass across Climie to Sissons, and Sissons smacked it home for his second goal of the season.

With a late power-play given, the Wolves emptied their net and ended Magnus Hellberg’s shutout bid with 1:03 remaining in regulation. A shot to the net was spilled out to Terry Broadhurst – whose low shot got through traffic and Hellberg to deny the Swede from what would have been his eighth career AHL shutout.

“He seems real calm,” said Evason of Hellberg. “He’s taking away a lot of net. When Magnus is good, and I have no idea about goaltending, but it sure seems that when he looks big he’s big. You don’t see a lot of net. He’s done a good job.”

The net was emptied again by the Wolves. This time they paid for it. Clune passed up to Mike Liambas who, after gaining neutral ice, fired into the empty net for his first goal of the season. Finishing this game off with a 4-1 win that ends the Admirals two-game losing skid.

Ramblings: Today’s scratches included Pontus Aberg, Patrick Cehlin, Garrett Noonan, and Frederick Gaudreau. Both teams rotated their goaltenders from the previous night. That meant a second start of the season for Magnus Hellberg. The goal for Viktor Stalberg was his first AHL goal since 2/20/10 as a member of the Toronto Marlies. The team he scored on? The Manitoba Moose. With their 31 shots on goal, the Milwaukee Admirals pushed the Chicago Wolves to a new season high for shots allowed in a game.

Thoughts from today’s game? Was this a return to form for the Admirals? Should Magnus Hellberg start being given a chance to start more games? Did we see the last of Viktor Stalberg on his conditioning assignment here today?

Bitten; Admirals taken down 5-1 by Chicago Wolves

The Admirals lost 5-1 on the road against the Chicago Wolves Saturday night. It is the Admirals first road defeat of the season. Despite an early goal from Mark Van Guilder, the Wolves grabbed this game by the horns around the halfway point of the first period and never let go.

The Admirals were able to get on the board early on the road tonight. Anthony Bitetto’s attempted stretch pass for Mark Van Guilder cleared all the way to the end boards. Due to how fast the Bitetto pass was, it bounced off the end boards and right out to Van Guilder before starting netminder Jordan Binnington could go out and play the puck. Van Guilder’s shot went through the glove of Binnington and in for his second goal of the season.

It wasn’t until the midway point in the first period before the Wolves really started to come alive. Defenseman Petteri Lindbohm fired a writer that had eyes and got through Marek Mazanec for his second goal of the season. Moments later, Yannick Veilleux whipped a shot from the slot past Mazanec for his third goal of the season to give the Wolves their first lead over the Admirals this season.

Chicago’s pace kept surging in the second period. They scored a mere thirty-eight seconds into the frame after Jake Chelios’ one-timed effort from the far left blue line was redirected by Jeremy Welsh. Mazanec really had no chance with Welsh right on his doorstep. It goes down as his fourth goal of the season.

The lone bright spot for the Admirals went bust in the third period when their perfect penalty killing performance finally conceded a goal. Shane Harper was able to take the puck from a neutral ice faceoff, enter into the attacking zone, fire, and ring a shot off the post and in. It was the first power-play goal from five chances for the Wolves. It’s Harper’s third goal of the season.

With well over two minutes remaining – Mazanec was brought to the bench to bring on an extra attacker. The final rally basically summed this game up. There wasn’t a lot of offense from the Admirals. There wasn’t a clean shooting lane. And, literally tenths of a second before the final horn sounded, Welsh scored on the empty net to make it a 5-1 final.

Ramblings: Tonight’s scratches for the Admirals included Pontus Aberg, Jimmy Oligny, Mike Liambas, and Patrick Cehlin. Aberg was injured in Wednesday night’s game after a collision with Viktor Stalberg. Tonight was Rich Clune’s first AHL game since 1/11/13 when he was a member of the Manchester Monarchs.

Thoughts from tonight’s game? What has happened to the Admirals offense these recent games? Should forward lines get shaken up? Can they rebound tomorrow afternoon?

Wolves: Scouting the Enemy

Mazanec-102914-1
After starting off with five-straight wins – Marek Mazanec suffered his first loss of the season Wednesday night against the Iowa Wild. How does he respond in net? (Photo Credit: Scott Paulus)

The Milwaukee Admirals will look to rebound tonight after taking their first loss of the season on Wednesday night against the Iowa Wild.  The Ads are set for a road-home weekend set with the Chicago Wolves. And there is a chance that the AHL schedule may benefit the Ads tonight and even more so tomorrow.

With yesterday being an off-day for the Admirals – the Chicago Wolves were pushed hard on the road by the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Wolves came out on top 6-5 in OT to end their two-game skid. It’s a trek back from Grand Rapids to Chicago for a game against the Ads, and then a trip up to Milwaukee for another game with the Ads.

I’m expecting there to be a lot of hitting and strong forecheck work on the boards tonight by the Admirals. They have a chance to take an already tired opponent and exhaust them before the puck drops on Sunday afternoon. If they play their hand correctly – this could be a successful weekend for the Ads.

~Recent Run of Form~

Since the Admirals last played the Wolves their Amtrak Rivals have played two games. After the Admirals defeated them 3-2 in overtime, the Wolves followed up with a 4-3 road loss to the Rockford IceHogs and then the OT victory in Grand Rapids mentioned above.

In the last two games for the Wolves – they have allowed four-or-more goals. This comes with both of their goaltenders, Matt Climie and Jordan Binnington, taking part. It was the veteran Climie that picked up the win last night but, in doing so, he allowed five goals from twenty-six shots. In the loss to Rockford, Binnington had allowed four goals from twenty-nine shots on goal.

~Climie’s Arch Nemesis~

Climie’s history against the Milwaukee Admirals has been rather remarkable. The 31-year old netminder has played in 217 career AHL games. Of that total, he has played the Admirals twenty-nine times – including twice in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

2009-10: 3-1-0-0, 1.26 GAA, 0.956 SV%
2010-11: 2-1-0-1, 2.66 GAA, 0.890 SV%
2011-12: 5-2-0-0, 2.59 GAA, 0.927 SV%
2012-13: 0-7-0-1, 3.13 GAA, 0.889 SV%
2013-14: 1-2-0-0, 2.60 GAA, 0.893 SV%
2014-15: 0-0-1-0, 2.71 GAA, 0.857 SV%

His career mark against the Admirals in the regular season is 11-13-1-2 with a 2.49 GAA and a 0.902 SV%. Mind you, it’s those last four seasons with the Wolves to keep an eye on. The last last three seasons especially haven’t favored him at all – eleven defeats and only one win.

~Hunting in Packs~

The Wolves are currently led in scoring by Rob Bordson who has 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) in seven games. He is followed by a four-way tie for the second most points on the team with 6 points.

It’s a very deep roster that is finding offensive production all across the board in the early goings. Still, if I had one guy that I’d keep an eye out for this weekend it is – and remains Ty Rattie. In the Admirals-Wolves first meeting of the season his play, in combination with the speed of Terry Broadhurst, was outstanding to watch.

Someone else worth watching out for in a less-than-offensive sense is Cody Beach. He currently leads the entire league in penalty minutes with 68. His Fight Card already has three bouts attached to it this season. If Rich Clune makes his Admirals debut – perhaps we’re treated to a tilt between the two.

What are your expectations from this weekend’s games? Can the Admirals get back to winning form tonight? Scoreline predictions for the weekend? Do you see the Admirals rotating goalies at all this weekend?
